Investigation into fault last seen Aug 2018

Fault symptoms from 30/8/18

  • rate error high (> 30s/d) and dependant on position
  • amplitude low ≤200°
  • hand-winding would not increase amplitude or improve random fluctuating rate.

Investigation to confirm fault prior to arranging repair : 30/10/19

  • wind 40 turns manually & set time: Δ = -0.7s
  • on wrist 19:00
  • take TG measurements as auto power builds up over evening

Conclusion

There seems to be nothing wrong.

4 full days of on-wrist testing shows normal amplitude and rate error.

Power-run-down test gives a reserve time of ≥33 hours. This is less than the ETA 2836-2 spec of 38 hours. This may be due to starting the test with less than full wind? 33 hours is still acceptable. Rate and amplitude drops after 24 hours, but accumulated error is still acceptable if the test had been stopped before completion and the watch worn (an additional ~5 seconds of loss over the 33 hours of testing).

Restarting and achieving full-power/amplitude & normal rate error takes some time on-wrist - avoiding manually winding as far as possible, just enough to start the movement running. Is there still an intermittent problem with the winding or power?

Time will tell.
